Una plaga en las aguas de Yarinocha / A plague in Yarinocha's waters

The problem of lagoons overgrown with floating vegetation is known as "huamal" in the Peruvian jungle. These foating plants, principally species of Eichhornia and Pistis, flourish at Yarinacocha lagoon in Pucallpa, where the author was able to identify existing plants and the insects that feed off them. The insects present a potential for the biological control of these plant pests. Among the author's recommendations, is stressed the importance of reviving the natural macrofauna of this Peruvian Amazon ecosystem.

En la selva peruana se denomina "huamal" al problema de cobertura del espejo de agua libre en las lagunas, por la proliferación de plantas flotantes, principalmente especies de Eichhornia y Pistis. En la laguna de Yarinacocha, Pucallpa, el autor pudo identificar las plantas existentes y los insectos que se alimentan de ellas, constituyendo un potencial de control biológico contra estas plantas-plagas. Pudo apreciar el efecto del retiro mecánico del exceso de plantas flotantes. Entre sus recomendaciones destaca la importancia de devolver la macrofauna natural de estos ecosistemas de la Amazonia Peruana.

The authors, during Summer 1985, at Calca (Cusco-Perú), observing the stems of an introduced palm, as ornamental (Phoennix dactylefera), registered 14 species of epiphytic plants, and two species of trees reported as "pseudoepiphytic" because they grew as epiphytic but without producing flowers.The trees are Eucalyptus globulus (exotic9 and Schinus molle (native).
